Concealment Or Accessibility? With the right IWB holster, I´ve found both
When I first learned about the possibility of inside-the-waistband (IWB) carry I thought that in self-defense scenarios, I wouldn´t be able to draw my gun fast enough. That was when I started to work in Falcohoslters company and I suddenly had the opportunity to get advice from my new colleagues who have a deep understanding of the nuances of concealed carry.
Thanks to them I learned about various factors to consider when selecting the right IWB holster and I will do my best to pass this knowledge in this article. Whether you're a law enforcement officer, a licensed civilian, or like me, simply seeking to enhance your personal security, understanding the nuances of holster materials, design, and fit is key to making an informed decision. Join me as I delve into the world of IWB holsters so you can find the perfect match for your concealed carry needs, making your gun securely hidden and readily accessible.
What is an IWB Holster?
If you are a seasoned concealed carrier you will already know the answer to this question. If you want to check if your answer is correct or you are a newcomer, the following is meant for you: An Inside-the-Waistband (IWB) holster is a specialized type of firearm retention device that is uniquely designed for concealed carry. You can clip or fasten it directly to your belt and it sits inside the pants, snugly against your body. This is why you can sometimes hear IWB holsters being called inside pants holsters or waistband gun holsters. The typical position is along the waistline, where you can conceal the holster beneath your shirt, jacket, tuxedo, or whatever you prefer to wear. With the right IWB holster, I get to conceal my gun and, to my pleasant surprise, draw my gun quickly and easily when I need to.
If you are in law enforcement or military this carry style is meant for you. The discretion and effectiveness are merits that make IWB holsters an attractive choice for me (a behind the desk worker) too. With the IWB holsters the outline of your gun is less noticeable or even non-existent. This is known as 'printing' and it is a significant factor for concealed carry permit holders.
Why use an IWB Holster?
You can just as well ask „Why brush your teeth?“ Here are several of the key advantages:
- Enhanced Concealment: Their design ensures that the firearm is less visible than with other holster types. This reduced visibility is particularly advantageous in environments where discretion is paramount.
- Quick Access: Despite the concealment, these holsters allow for rapid draw, which is crucial in self-defense situations. This blend of accessibility and concealment is a primary reason for their popularity among concealed carry users.
- Weight Distribution: Many IWB holsters are engineered to distribute the weight of the firearm evenly across the waistline. This thoughtful design aspect makes them comfortable for extended wear, reducing strain and fatigue.
- Versatility in Clothing: They are compatible with a wide range of clothing styles, from casual to business attire, making them suitable for various social settings and professional environments.
- Customizable Fit: IWB holsters can be customized for features such as cant (angle) and height of sweat guard, allowing users to customize the fit according to their body type and personal preference.
- Security: waistband gun holsters often include retention mechanisms that securely hold the firearm in place, minimizing the risk of accidental discharge or loss of the weapon.
- Comfort: Modern IWB holsters are designed with comfort in mind, using materials and contours that reduce rubbing or discomfort to the wearer.
- Various Material Options: They are available in different materials, including leather, Kydex, nylon, and hybrid combinations, offering options to suit individual preferences for feel, durability, and maintenance.
Here is a summary for those who skipped the list above (as would I): Inside the waist holsters provide a practical and effective solution for those seeking a secure, comfortable, and discreet way to carry their firearm. Their design and features reflect a deep understanding of the needs of concealed carry users, balancing the critical aspects of safety, accessibility, and concealment.
The Different Types of IWB Holsters
This carry method offers an extensive range of IWB holster types, each designed to meet specific carrying preferences and requirements. In the next few paragraphs I will cover various holster types, including AIWB, canted, leather, Kydex, and hybrid models, providing you with the knowledge to choose the right one for your lifestyle and firearm.
AIWB Holster (Appendix Carry Holster):
Positioned in front of the body, around the appendix area. I recommend this position if you value quickness above anything, here you have a high accessibility to your firearm. I find it the best position for concealment, but also for comfort. However, this is not universal for every body shape so make sure to research what is best for you before purchase.
Canted IWB Holster:
Once you decide to go for a position on the hip ( 3 o’clock for right-hander or 9 o’clock for left-hander) or more towards the back ( 4-5 o’clock ) I strongly recommend choosing a holster with a cant. This angled design will help you facilitate a more ergonomic draw but also conceals the grip of your firearm very effectively.
Leather IWB Holster:
Now let’s talk materials. Classic IWB leather holsters mold to the shape of the gun and the wearer's body over time. This is why they are considered to be one of the best options for comfortable carry during the whole day. Inside the waistband leather holster can be more silent than Kydex options. Thanks to this potential thread wouldn't hear you drawing or reholstering during emergency situations. Make sure the IWB holster leather used in your holster is broken in before you start every-day carrying it. Leather IWB gun holsters are commonly appreciated in the form of an IWB revolver holster or holster for 1911. However, it works flawlessly with all handguns on the market. I personally prefer this material above others.
Hybrid IWB Holster (Leather Kydex Holster):
Combines the comfort & silence of leather with the durability and safety of Kydex. Leather and Kydex holster can be a game-changer when it comes to concealed carry inside the waistband because it offers best of the both worlds. The leather platform should face your body & Kydex shell should face outside, shielding your handgun from external dangers. I myself tested this & Hybrids are right between Kydex & leather when it comes to silence while drawing. This option is very popular nowadays & if Falco’s leather holsters aren’t as perfect as they are now, this will be my go-to option.
Kydex IWB Holster:
Made from durable thermoplastic, these holsters are lightweight and maintenance-free. Kydex IWB holsters are widely respected as the best option for concealed carry because the shape of these holsters does not change over time & you do not have to treat them well so they last longer.
Nylon IWB Holster:
Durable and lightweight, these are often more affordable and offer a semi-universal fit for various gun models. However, do not just go for any nylon holster you find in your favorite gun shop. If I went for this option I would hoose one that features a sights channel. This rail not only protects your sights & thus your handgun but also the holster itself. A common issue with nylon holsters is that they are damaged by cuts of sights while reholstering or drawing and this issue can be flawlessly resolved with the mentioned rail or at least the reinforced side of the holster.
IWB OWB Holster:
If you are an indecisive type, or simply like to have your options open, this is a holster ready for both concealed carry inside the waistband and ( outside ) belt carry. It is ideal for those who like universal designs & seek multi-functional accessories.

Hybrid IWB Holster: A116 L 2021
Having personally tested the A116 L 2021, I can confidently say it redefines hybrid holster standards. The Italian leather and U.S. Kydex merge beautifully, offering a snug, custom fit for my handgun. The perforated leather platform is a standout feature, promoting breathability and preventing discomfort during long carry periods. What I particularly appreciate is its low-profile design; the strategically placed steel belt clips make it remarkably effective & stable even for my full-size 1911. I see this model as the best holster for concealment on this list.
Pros:
- Comfort & Breathability: Extended carry is a breeze, thanks to the airy leather platform.
- Durability & Stability: The Italian leather and U.S. Kydex balance is commendable for both comfort and gun retention.
- Concealment: It excels in low-profile carry, making it a go-to for my 1911.
Cons:
- Specific: Custom design of Kydex outside shell means & cant use it with other handguns like Glock 17.
- Maintenance: The leather part demands care, but it's a small price for the comfort it offers.
Leather IWB Holster: A634 L
The A634 L is a leather inside waistband holster that exudes quality and craftsmanship. In my use, it has proven to be a slim, highly comfortable & concealable holster. Its capacity to accommodate firearms with lights or lasers is a significant advantage. I've worn it in various positions, and the slight cant of this IWB leather gun holster makes drawing smooth and effortless. Pros:
- Elegant Design: The premium Italian IWB holsters leather is not just durable but also adds a touch of class.
- Customizable Fit: You can choose your preferred color, hand & special specs of your firearms
- Adaptive Comfort: Holster was comfortable out of the box, however, it seems to get even better with use.
Cons:
- Break-In Time: It requires some patience to achieve the retention you need from it. The holster was tighter out of the box.
- Model Specific: This holster was specifically made for a combination of my Sig P365 & TLR7A. It probably wouldn’t fit other handguns & light combinations.
Kydex IWB Holster: A901 2021
Testing the A901 2021 revealed its strengths as a low-profile, slim fit holster. Its retention and durability are top-notch. The design allows for shirt tucking, making it discreet under my clothing. The optional holster claw is a game-changer for closer body concealment. I was afraid of one clip on the side instead of a wide one in the middle & honestly, it is better than expected. A smaller clip means a more compact design.
Pros:
- Discreet Carry: Its low profile is ideal for concealed carry.
- Hassle-Free Maintenance: Being all Kydex, it's easy to maintain.
- Printing: The optional claw feature adds to concealability, pushing grip of your handgun to your body.
Cons:
- Comfort: It's a bit rigid compared to leather or hybrid options.
- Rigidity: Kydex lacks the flexibility and body-conforming nature of leather.
Nylon IWB Holster: A805 Smith
My experience with the A805 Smith in waist holster has been impressive. It's an innovative blend of nylon and leather, ensuring durability while maintaining shape. The integrated plastic sights rail is a thoughtful addition, protecting my gun's sights & holster itself effectively. The holster's design ensures it stays open for easy reholstering.
Pros:
- Innovative Design: The nylon and leather combo offers a unique balance of rigidity and comfort.
- Sights Protection: The integrated rail is a practical feature for safety of your handgun and holster itself.
- Ease of Use: It remains open for hassle-free reholstering.
Cons:
- Aesthetic Appeal: It lacks the classic look of a full leather holster.
After hands-on experiences with these gun holsters for concealment, I can attest to their distinct advantages. The A116 L IWB gun holster shines for concealment, the A634 L for its comfort, the A901 for durability, and the A805 Smith for its innovative design. Your choice should align with your specific needs and preferences for the most effective concealed carry experience.
